Lara Wickes
Lara is the principal oboist of the Santa Barbara Symphony and acting principal oboist of the New West Symphony. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California where she studied Allan Vogel, David Weiss, and Joel Timm. She also holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the California Institute of the Arts and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Oregon. She is an active performer in the Los Angeles area, playing regularly in many orchestras in the region, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic. She is also active in Film and Television music recording. Her appearances at music festivals have included the Lucerne Music Festival under the direction of Pierre Boulez, as well as the Spoleto Festival USA, the Henry Mancini Institute, Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Sarasota Music Festival, and solo performances at the Chintimini Festival in Oregon. In addition to oboe, Lara also plays theremin and Baroque oboe (two instruments, she notes, that make the modern oboe seem easy!) She has performed in Carnegie Hall on both oboe and theremin. She recently performed with Prince on the Tonight Show. Originally from Corvallis, Oregon, Lara currently resides in North Hollywood with her husband, Ben and her dog, Ollie.
