David Simmons
Singer, actor and radio personality David Simmons first took to the stage at age 5 as an Elvis impersonator in a hometown talent show. Musical precocity and a love of the center of attention led him to studies in opera at Oberlin and at Indiana University. His wide-ranging career has put him in a grass skirt and coconut halter as Luther Billis in South Pacific, given him a semi-permanent hunch as Pittichinaccio in Tales of Hoffmann, and made him prance about as a sub-atomic particle in Stockhausen’s Atmen gibt das Leben. David also created the roles of Arelle in David Carson’s musical adaptation of Molière’s The Physician in Spite of Himself and Dan in Tapestry Theater’s Look at Us Now. Next month, he also appears as Matt Brody and Loge in Opera Theater Oregon's simultaneous small-stage productions of the television show Baywatch and Wagner's Das Rheingold. Plans for the Fall include Portland Opera's mounting of Philip Glass's Orphée and the first year of the M.D. program at OHSU. David lives in Corvallis with his son, daughter, and a hamster named "Bitey."
