Adam Matthes

Adam MatthesAdam Matthes, viola, grew up in Corvallis and began playing viola at age nine, through the elementary strings program at Mountain View Elementary School run by Charles Creighton. He later took private lessons with Abigail Stoughton and Marlan Carlson, and also studied with Joel Belgique of the Oregon Symphony. Awarded a Corvallis Youth Symphony orchestral fellowship in 2004 to study at the Aspen Music Festival, he has performed chamber music with Alexander Kerr and Sarah Chang. Major influences during his studies at Aspen include John Graham, James Dunham, Jeffery Irvine, and Darrett Adkins.

Chintimini audiences remember his role in the remarkable 2003 student ensemble, the Arietta Piano Quartet, which included pianist Amy Wu, violist Joyce Kwan, and cellist Amy Kwon. In their own Festival concert Adam and Amy Wu performed the second movement of the Shostakovich viola sonata, and the quartet played Mozart.

Adam is currently in his final semester as an undergraduate student at the Eastman School of Music as a student of John Graham. Upon graduation, he is scheduled to go on tour in China with a piano quintet composed of Eastman colleagues.
