Martin Hornstein

Martin Hornstein Cellist Martin Hornstein was born in Vienna in 1954. The cello teachers influencing him most were Valentin Erben at the Vienna Musikhochschule and Harvey Shapiro at the Juilliard School in New York. He received early impulses in chamber music through intensive contacts with the Alban Berg Quartet. Even during his studies he began to perform as a soloist and chamber musician in Europe and Japan. Between 1985 and 1993 he was the cellist of the Vienna Schubert Trio, giving over 400 concerts in Europe, the Americas, and the Far East. In 1994, Mr. Hornstein founded the Altenberg Trio Wien (non-English site) together with pianist Claus-Christian Schuster and violinist Amiram Ganz, earning recognition quickly throughout the world.

Martin Hornstein regularly teaches at international master classes and, together with his colleagues, is in charge of a seminar course for chamber music at the Conservatory of the City of Vienna.

He plays the "ex van Zweygberg" cello, built in Piacenza in 1743 by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini (1711-1786) on loan from the instrument collection of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank.
