Ben Freimuth

Ben FreimuthBen Freimuth joined the San Francisco Symphony in 2003 as its new bass clarinetist. Prior to his arrival in California, he held the principal clarinet chair with the Kansas City Symphony and performed there as soloist on two occasions. A native of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, Ben studied at the Interlochen Arts Academy with Debbie Chodacki before attending the Cleveland Institute of Music. In Cleveland, he studied with Linnea Neriem and performed with the Cleveland Orchestra. He also attended the Tanglewood Music Center for three seasons.

Mr. Freimuth received his graduate degree from Rice University, studying for two years with David Peck. There he also met his wife-to be, Elizabeth Freimuth, who was later named principal horn of the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra and is now principal of the Cincinnati Symphony.

Upon graduation, Ben played with the New World Symphony in Miami and worked with Michael Tilson Thomas for the first time. After living and freelancing in the Denver area, he was offered the bass clarinet position with the Utah Symphony in Salt Lake City. While in Utah, he won the principal clarinet position with the Kansas City Symphony. In addition to performing, Ben enjoys teaching and coaching chamber music at the San Francisco Conservatory. Ben and his wife Elizabeth have been very happy in the Bay Area with their cats Bella, Woodstock, Franklin, and Winston, and their beloved black lab Snoopy.
