Mike Curtis

Woodwind Performer and Composer

Mike CurtisFor 25 years Mike Curtis has performed as a professional musician: as a bassoonist with the Eugene Symphony, the Arrieu Wind Quintet and the Mexico State Symphony, and on other woodwinds with his own Mike Curtis Klezmer Quartet, the duo Oboe Madness, and many jazz groups. From 1985 to 1996 and from 1999 to 2004, he was principal bassoon in the Corvallis-OSU Symphony, for which he also conducted five concerts. In 2001 he traveled to China with the Arrieu Wind Quintet; then soloed in China in 2005 in his composition Sketches of China.

During those 25 years he has taught the woodwind instruments and ensembles at several Northwest universities. Composition for Mike, however, began at age 40 with duets written for Oboe Madness. Since then he has completed a large body of works for woodwind and string ensembles, published by Advance Music of Germany and MSS Publishing of the USA. His best-known work, A Klezmer Wedding, is heard on at least 24 different CD's.

"Mike Curtis is at the forefront of composers who take world music as their inspiration for compositions." Prof. Nicholas Morrison, Utah State University "Mike Curtis has built a solid reputation with his fine jazz and ethnic compositions and arrangements...fun compositions to prepare and a treat for the audience as well." Dr. Jon Beebe, THE DOUBLE REED, Oct. 2000
